In today’s world, there is a general need to get things done faster. We have drive-through eateries so people get food faster. Short fifteen second videos on TikTok so the audience consumes content faster. You can see it all around you, the need to get things done quickly.

In a fast-paced society like this, you stand out when you have a habit of procrastination. We’ve all experienced this, after setting a goal, you keep postponing it and sometimes never begin. Below we will share some tips to help you stop procrastinating. 

Understand why you’re procrastinating 

We often tell ourselves we are too busy, but it’s funny how there is always enough time to have a quick smoke break or watch one episode of our favorite series. When you dig deep into the matter, you realize you actually have time—a lot of it. The problem is you keep pushing important tasks aside. 

You need to understand the reason you procrastinate; doing this is the first step to taking charge of your life. Think about the task at hand, perhaps cleaning the drainage or mowing the lawn. How does it make you feel? Do you feel anxious, stressed, or just bored?

By understanding how you feel about specific tasks you can narrow down your reason for avoiding them. 

Get Started

Most people tend to bask in the process of planning. They plan for weeks but forget the most important thing, you need to get started. A plan without any action can’t help anyone. The best part about taking action is, that once you start, it becomes easier. 

Give Yourself Little Breaks

No one puts off activities that give them joy. How many times have you said “I need to play Call of Duty” and didn’t? You should look for ways to incentivize yourself with little rewards and breaks after some hard work. 

If you’re writing an assignment, after working for an hour, you can take a 20-minute recess to stretch or play a quick video game. Little breaks ease the tension and allow you to work with renewed vigor. 

Prioritize

Twenty-four hours might seem like a lot, but it’s not. You’ve already lost a healthy sum by sleeping. Learn how to prioritize your time and focus on important tasks when you’re most active. Doing this lets you get the best out of your day. 

Set a deadline

If you give yourself two days to get a task done you will do it in two days. If you give yourself four hours, you can complete it in four hours.

The point is to set a deadline—a task without a deadline takes forever because you gave it that power.  Try doing this when you have a task at hand; give yourself five minutes and start, even if you don’t finish. Do this often enough and it becomes a part of you.
